I have always been interested in aviation and one of my favorite hobbies over the years has been Microsoft Flight Simulator. The screenshots above are from Microsoft Flight Simulator X (also known as FSX).

I started with Flight Simulator way back in 1980 when the first version was released. The game has progressed tremendously since those humble beginnings. Click the image to the left of this paragraph to get an idea of what the game looked like back then.

The Hangar Hotel

The Hangar Hotel

In June 2005 my wife and I took a weekend trip to Fredericksburg, Texas and stayed at the Hangar Hotel. The Hangar Hotel is located adjacent to the runway ramp area at Gillespie County Airport.

I have posted some pictures from our visit to the Hangar Hotel in our photo gallery.

The 4th Annual Friends of Meigs Field Open House

Meigs Field Open House

On September 19, 1999 I visited Meigs Field in Chicago, Illinois for the 4th Annual Friends of Meigs Field Open House. There were many airplanes on display and the highlight of the day was a short trip in a 1929 Ford Trimotor airplane.

Meigs Field was, for many years, the default airport for Microsoft Flight Simulator. As a long time user of Flight Simulator it was a wonderful experience to be able to take a flight from the real airport.

In our photo gallery you can see some pictures from the event.

Sadly, on the night of March 30, 2003, Meigs Field was destroyed by order of mayor Richard Daley. Meigs Field was a legendary airport and a Chicago icon for many decades. I am glad that I was able to visit and take a flight from this wonderful airport before it was demolished.

- Ed Hamill, who has flown both aircraft.
